Disney has canceled Star Wars: The Acolyte after just one season.
Star Wars: The Acolyte was a bold and unconventional attempt to explore a different kind of Jedi narrative, sparking mixed reactions among fans. Despite receiving decent reviews and achieving average viewership, it seems that wasn't enough to persuade Disney to continue the series. As a result, the streaming platform has decided to cancel The Acolyte after just one season.
Deadline reported that Star Wars: The Acolyte will not be renewed for a second season, disappointing fans who were eager to see Manny Jacinto’s Qimir and Amandla Stenberg’s Osha further delve into the dark side of the Force after the intense events of the first eight episodes. Unlike many other Jedi-focused Star Wars narratives, The Acolyte took a unique approach, highlighting the hubris and flaws of the Jedi and their religious order.
The Acolyte introduced some intriguing concepts, though the execution was often hampered by uneven writing and brief episodes. Second seasons often serve as a chance for creators to refine their vision, focusing on what resonated with audiences and improving on areas that fell short. Many shows don’t truly find their identity until later seasons, but in today’s fiercely competitive streaming landscape, few have the luxury of waiting that long.
The show’s unconventional take on the Jedi and its diverse cast also made it a target for a vocal subset of toxic Star Warsfans, who launched a relentless campaign against it. They scrutinized every promotional interview, exaggerated apparent plot inconsistencies, and fanned the flames of minor controversies over retconned lore.
Showrunner Leslye Headland had previously pitched ideas for a second season to Disney, hoping for a renewal. However, it seems Disney executives were not convinced. According to Deadline, The Acolyte quickly dropped off Nielsen’s top-10 list for weekly viewership and reportedly had the worst-performing season finale of any Star Wars series.
